You might have many used or unwanted household goods. You might be thinking of throwing them all away or thinking of which cousin or friends will luckily have your good old stuff.

But why call a distant family member when you can bring out tables and set up a thrift store just right on the curb and make some money? Yes, It’s garage sale time.

Garage sale is a good way not only to make a quick cash, but also an efficient way to declutter your house. Here are the things you need to do to start your own yard sale.

Gather all the stuff you want to sell

Search all over your house and look for items that you and your family don’t longer need, anything that you can find. Gather them all and choose which stuff you would like to sell for good.

Inventory and Pricing

Make a list of inventory for the items you want to sell in a paper and price accordingly. This will make things easier for you as you don’t have to price on the spot and end up overpricing or cost next to nothing.

Attach a price tag

Attaching a price tag to each item will help you save a lot of time and energy from answering all of the buyers’ questions about the price of your stuff.

Talk to your Local Authorities

Garage sale doesn’t require a business license, but, in some jurisdictions a permit may be required. Some cities don’t require licenses or permit as long as not more than one yard sale occurs each quarter per calendar year. While for other cities they only allow two garage sales per year for a household group.

Be sure to talk and explain to the right person in charge that you’re planning to do a yard sale. Check your town hall website too, maybe they provide information about garage sale permits.

Ask your family to assist you

Ask your family to help you manage the garage sale. Selling stuff with your family is enjoyable and you can also teach your kids how to make profit at the early stage.

Choose a date and time

Setting the date could be tricky, especially if your location experiences different seasons. Nothing beats a summer-time garage sale and spring should definitely come to mind since people will have that itch of going out after being held in their houses during the cold weather.

Of course, you can fully take advantage of the coming weekend so you can start on Friday or Saturday. Payday is also a good day to do business. Also, don’t forget to check the weather forecast if you don’t want to sell under the rain.

Advertise your upcoming sale

One of the most important things in this venture is to get the buyers’ attention. You should advertise your sale in advance to spread the news about your upcoming sale and let them know about the date and the time where it is going to be.

Organize your display

Be sure you have enough space for your display. Don’t just place your stuff in a big heap of pile and let your buyers navigate through the mountain of junk you created.

You can display small things on top of the tables and big stuff under the tables, so they can easily be seen by the customers. Make sure to leave enough space between tables to give comfort to your customers.

Attract by passers by placing large items in front of your garage. Don’t forget electric outlets if you have electric products available.

Have a last day deal

The last day of your garage sale is the best moment to mark down all of the unsold stuff. Offer a buy one take one deal, buy an item and the second item is 50% off or 50%-70% off.

Pulling off a successful garage sale is not that easy. But with the help of your family & unleashing your creativity, thinking of great ideas to sell your old stuff, everything will work out just fine.
